"As I went to Walsingham"
The York Waits with Deborah Catterall – mezzo and Gareth Glyn Roberts – tenor.
Based on the Ballad of the same name, which tells the story of a lady pilgrim who rejects the suit of a palmer (not for the first time), this programme sets religious works by Tallis, Campion and Wilder against secular songs and lively dances of the period, including Kemps jig. Of course Will Kemp's own journey from London to Norwich was motivated less by religion and more by the need to boost his ego and fill his purse...

"Fortune my foe: Music from the time of the Gunpowder Plot"
The York Waits with Deborah Catterall
Music from Elizabethan and Jacobean England - including pieces that became popular throughout Europe - plus dramatic readings from original sources that recount the origins and grisly aftermath of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. The concert Includes works by Byrd and Dowland and features instruments of the period, including shawms, sackbuts, recorders, curtal and the renaissance violin.

An all English Christmas programme ranging from 15th century carols through Tudor revels to 17th century ballads. Music for worship, feasting and dancing sit alongside some vivid depictions of Tudor winters.
